Pick the wrong plastic and you’ll know about it quickly. Acrylic that cracks when you drill it, polycarbonate that won’t glue cleanly, a front panel that scratches the moment a gecko brushes against it. When you’re building your own enclosure, the material choice matters more than most hobbyists realise at the outset.
The three plastics that come up most often in this context are acrylic, polycarbonate, and PETG. Each has real strengths, and each has trade-offs that can catch you out depending on what you’re building and who’s going to live in it. Here’s where it gets interesting: the best option isn’t the same for every build, so let’s go through the key properties one by one.
Acrylic: Clear and Affordable, But Brittle at the Drill
Acrylic is probably the most common choice for DIY vivariums, and it’s easy to see why. It’s optically very clear, relatively inexpensive, and easy to find in cut-to-size formats. It also takes a clean edge when scored and snapped correctly, and bonds well with solvent cement.
The problem is that acrylic is brittle under impact and stress. Drill too close to an edge, use the wrong bit, or tighten a fixing too aggressively and you’ll get a crack. It also scratches more readily than polycarbonate or PETG, which is worth thinking about if you plan to clean the inside regularly or if your animals will be moving against the panels.
For a basic plant terrarium or a display build that won’t take much physical abuse, acrylic works well. For a reptile enclosure where something will be digging, rubbing, or pressing against the panels daily, it starts to show its limitations.
Why PETG Is Worth Taking Seriously for Enclosure Builds
PETG sits between acrylic and polycarbonate in terms of impact resistance, and in many ways it’s the most practical option for a home-built enclosure. It machines cleanly without chipping, drills without cracking, and can be cold bent up to around 2mm thickness without whitening or splitting.
If you’re sourcing a sheet for a specific enclosure size, a cut-to-size clear PETG sheet is a good option, since you can order exactly the panel dimensions you need without waste or extra cutting. PETG also has good chemical resistance, which matters when you’re using substrate sprays, disinfectants, or cleaning solutions regularly.
Light transmission sits at around 88 to 90%, which is comparable to glass and more than adequate for viewing. One thing to bear in mind: standard PETG isn’t UV-stabilised, so if you’re running a UVB lamp directly against the panel for extended periods, it may yellow over time. It’s fine for most setups, but worth factoring in if UV provision is central to the animal’s welfare.
Polycarbonate: Toughest of the Three, Hardest to Work With
Polycarbonate is the strongest option by a significant margin, around five times more impact-resistant than acrylic. For escape-prone species or anything that puts pressure on the panels, it holds up better than either alternative.
The trade-offs are real though. Polycarbonate scratches very easily, to the point where the viewing quality degrades with regular use. It also doesn’t bond well with standard solvent cements, so gluing panels together cleanly is harder. On top of that, it tends to be more expensive and can be trickier to source in smaller cut sizes.
For most hobbyist builds, polycarbonate is overkill unless you have a specific reason to need that level of impact resistance, such as a large monitor or a powerful digger.
What to Think About Before You Buy
Rather than picking a material based on what others use, it’s worth matching the properties to your actual build. A few things to consider:
